The answer depends on you! If yourtravel schedule is flexible and your finances allow for a layover (sometimes in a "high cost" area) while you wait to move, space travel is a good travel choice. While some travelers check in and depart on the same day, many factors can combine to make purchasing a commercial ticket your best or only option. Remember, the success of a trip to Space A depends on flexibility and good timing.
The Services jointly determine the eligibility of Space A. AMC's primary responsibility is the airlift of official DoD traffic. Passengers in Space A are only accommodated to service passengers and cargo.
Reservations cannot be made for all passengers in Space A. All Space A on the trip is assigned based on when you sign up.
All travelers remain on the register for 60 days after registration, for the duration of their leave applicant authorization, or until they are selected for travel, whichever occurs first.

Net. DoD has reserved pet transportation for passengers in Permanent Change of Station (PCS) status. Additionally, traveling with pets would be difficult at best due to limited pet space, pet import document requirements, and the possibility of quarantine in the event of a plane diversion.
In general, no. Some terminals must collect a cap charge or federal inspection fee from Space A passengers on commercial contract missions. Meals can be purchased for a nominal fee at most airline terminals while traveling by air. Meal service on AMC Category B charters for full aircraft is free.

We estimate that in the past 7+ years of world travel we have saved over $20,000 making military hops. Our experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, and if it's a viable option, Space-A is my preferred way to fly.
Talking to others about our travels, we were surprised to realize how little the military knew about A space travel, let alone used it.
Even those who knew it was an option refused to give military flights a chance. They have heard that you are waiting too long, the aircraft has too many maintenance problems, or flights are canceled at the last minute.
The bottom line is that yes, those things happen. Flying Space-A requires patience and flexibility and is not a good choice for all circumstances. But if you've flown on a commercial airline lately, you know that all these inconveniences also occur with scheduled flights. The difference is that Space-A flights are free!

Space available flights, aka "MAC flights" or "military hops", are military operational flights that have extra seats. The military mission takes precedence, and Space-A passengers are essentially cargo.
Benelux Service Members Take Flight In Joint C 130 Orientation
There is no fee to fly Space-A, except for Patriot Express (PE) flights, for which passengers must pay Space-A a small fee per person.
Space-A passengers are divided into six Space-A categories or "Cats": 1 is the largest and 6 is the smallest.
Available seats on the plane are first offered to passengers in categories with lower numbers. All remaining seats can be used by travelers in higher numbered (lower priority) categories. Priority within a category is based on date of entry, as discussed below.
In the context of leisure travel, active duty servicemen traveling with or without dependents are on escorted moral leave (EML) category 2 and on regular leave they are category 3.

They can take military hops in the continental United States (CONUS) and to/from Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and other US territories.
Please note that the list of eligible passengers discussed above is not exhaustive. Other passengers, including certain Department of Defense civilians, are eligible to use available military space travel under various circumstances.
For a complete list and more information on eligibility by category, see table 3 in section 4.11 of DOD Instruction 4515.13.

Flying Patriot Express? Expect Random Covid 19 Testing Soon
The first step is to register at any military passenger terminal from which you may depart (including your destination). Please note that you are not signing up for a specific flight. You sign up to compete for each flight with Space-A seats at a specific terminal.
If you sign up by email, you must include all of the information in the "Space-A Enrollment Options and Required Information" section of the AMC website for available space trips (see screenshot below).
You can find the current email addresses for all military passenger terminals in the Passenger Terminal Directory under the Space-A Registration section.
Priority within a Space-A category is based on the date of enlistment, so the sooner you enlist (up to 60 days prior to travel date at most locations, 45 days or less at some Navy locations), the better. Active duty cannot sign up for Space-A trips until they are on leave.
