FORT HOOD, Texas -- An armored vehicle skids off a wet road, spewing mud as it travels. Suddenly, a target appeared a few hundred feet away from the mine-resistant ambush vehicle.

"[This training] helps give my Soldiers a sense of what we might face in Afghanistan," said Capt. Ronald Rice, commander of Troop Lightning, 4th Squadron, and this training only builds on the skills they already have. Soldiers get the right mindset. Our mission is to ensure the safety of our Soldiers while advising Afghan forces. We will provide a security element for a team of advisors."
Rice said this will be his second combat deployment and his third tour overseas. He often mentors younger, inexperienced soldiers.
"Things can change in an instant," Rice said. "You have to be mentally prepared and ready to defend not only yourself, but others as well."
Rice is one of many combat veterans in his unit. Staff Sergeant David Wall, a cavalry scout and squad leader in Lightning Troop, also offered his advice to his soldiers.

"Train when you fight; I always tell my Soldiers to take it seriously because you have to prepare yourself like you would on the battlefield," Wall said.
"I'm very proud of our troops," Rice said. "My Soldiers have come a long way since they began training seven months ago and will perform well in whatever mission they are assigned during the deployment."
"I'm excited to help train less experienced Soldiers, and look forward to deploying with them," Wall added.
