Sometimes they come back: the powerful .44 Auto Mag pistol is being produced again. The original manufacturer of the gun, Auto Mag Corporation, closed in 1982. In 2015, a new company, Auto Mag LTD. Corp. was formed to bring this legend back to the market. The new company bought all the assets and rights of Auto Mag, and after a long period of testing, some models and many improvements on the original model, these days the original gun was sent again. These are 77 pistols with 8.5 inch barrels for Dirty Harry's Auto Mag in the movie.

The new Auto Mags are being manufactured under contract with Excel Industries. Originally, Excel Arms was supposed to manufacture only the magazine and frame, but they offered to finish the entire gun.

The "new" Auto Mag pistols are short-revolve pistols chambered in powerful calibers such as .44 AMP, .357 AMP, and .45 Win Mag.

The Auto Mag pistol designed by Harry Sanford was, and always has been, a unique firearm: a short-action pistol (similar to an AR-15 rifle) with a locking rotating bolt. Fired the .44 Auto Mag Pistol (AMP), a specially developed cartridge designed to harness the power of the .44 Magnum as a semi-automatic pistol. But things didn't go so well for Auto Mag Corporation: as explained on the company's "new" Auto Mag website,

"The original company failed because it believed the market would support the thousands of Auto Mags sold each month."

"Based on market analysis that supports new Auto Mag sales of approximately 150 guns per month. As part of this market analysis, we have not planned an extensive marketing strategy. We rely on word of mouth, social media, and websites. Traffic and Auto Mag- fans will drive sales. In general, we want to sell directly to customers."

Initially, the new Auto Mag will only be offered in .44 AMP, but later it will be offered in .357 AMP and .45 Win Mag, the company said. For ammunition, they are working with Starline Brass to produce 100,000 cases of .44 AMP ammo and are in talks with several ammo manufacturers to produce .44 AMP ammo.

The new Auto Mag is available in 6.5 and 8.5 barrels. The company's website lists the 6.5-barrel .44 AMP Auto Mag at $3,495, while the 8.5-barrel version is $3,795. They also offer a complete replacement top for $1,599. Over the past five years, Auto Mag has revitalized the Auto Mag brand and made over twenty improvements to the pistol's reliability, safety, and ease of use. From new strength, reliability, and materials, the new .44 Auto Mag does everything the old version did.

PSA graciously offered Auto Mag a spot on their track so the company could showcase the latest improvements to the legendary .44 Auto Mag pistol. We are Auto Mag Ltd. Co was able to talk to owner Patrick Henry about the gun and he showed us two versions of the gun. We also finally got a chance to shoot a gun that has been on display in the showroom for the past 6 years.

Auto Mag .44 Amp Back On The Market!

Shooting a .44 Auto Mag pistol has been on my firearms bucket list for a long time, and I'm glad I finally got to do it. In our honest conversation with Patrick, we learned that the company has worked hard over the past 6 years to make the Auto Mag pistol reliable and safe. In total, more than 50 changes were made to the model.

We also found out that there is an additional version of the Auto Mag pistol called the Raven Edition, which has a dark finish with a wooden grip, which I think contrasts perfectly with the highly polished chrome finish of the original Auto Mag model. The gun looks and feels the same, but now hundreds and thousands of people can shoot the 44 Auto Mag on a range day, very reliable and extremely safe.

The gun has a good sound but doesn't break the wrist, which is due to the unique twist bolt used by Auto Mag. The Auto Mag pistol should be available for order now, but due to supply chain issues, Mr. Henry said in an email that the 6.5" and 8.5" pistols are currently delayed by five to six months. However, at the time of writing, several Raven Edition pistols are expected to ship within the next 3 months. Starline Brass will also produce new brass for the 44 Auto Mag cartridge.
