Model 19 Classic - We've covered the history of the .357 Magnum cartridge several times. It all started with the .38 Special Cartridge. The .38 Special is a well balanced and accurate cartridge.
Improvements in powder and bullet technology have resulted in more powerful .38 Special loads. A special case was extended to prevent the cartridge from being chambered in the .38 Special and .357 Magnum was created.
Model 19 Classic
The original .357 Magnum was a heavy duty round similar to the modern Smith and Wesson Model 27 or 627. While effective and accurate, they were heavy for everyday carry.

Smith and Wesson was a dominant force in the police market from the 1940s through the automatic pistol era.
During the 1950s, they launched a number of attractive restorations, including the Highway Patrol and the Magnum War.
The Combat Magnum had the same reliable action as the Model 10, but added higher sights, an adjustable rear sight, a tilting front sight, a heavier barrel, and charger.
It was similar to the .38 Combat Masterpiece, but improved on this revolver as well. The Combat Magnum is much easier and faster to handle than the larger frame Magnum revolver.

Despite the setback, the mantra of the day was not many shots, but one shot well fired. The Magnum dispelled all doubts about the effectiveness of the service pistol.
The accepted program at the time was to fire 20 .38 individual rounds for each Magnum round. It worked well.
The police caliber was held at 50 yards, and many officers shot well at long distances. The problem of long-term use was the high wear of small parts.
The L-Frame, a heavy duty revolver with the same grip as the K-Frame Combat Magnum, was introduced near the end of the service pistol period.

Smith and Wesson recently reintroduced the Model 19. The longevity issues of the K-frame with heavy loads were properly addressed.
The new revolver has a 4.25 inch barrel and the extra quarter inch allows the revolver to be sold in Canada. Smith and Wesson calls the new pistol the Classic, marking its role in the revolutionary Classic line.
The lock, hammer and trigger are injection molded steel or MIM material. MIM may not be truly reinforced, but it has the look and feel.

Manual processing is less and, with modern CNC machines, tolerances are good. The firing pin is not mounted on the hammer, but on the frame.
This isn't a transfer system, but it's a great way to deal with Magnum. The action is shorter than the Combat Magnum, which went out of production in 1999.
Before the war (before 1946) the revolutionaries had an even longer action. Although they are smooth, they are not as suitable for double quick shooting as the modern recoil that came into being in 1946 and is being modified today.
Although my original stainless steel Combat Magnum is very smooth, it has been in use for over 30 years and has taken its toll.

Also, the Modern Warfare Magnum can at least compare to any K-Frame action that Smith and Wesson has offered.
The pipe is no longer solid steel, but a pipe with a heavy coat. The ejector rod is no longer attached to the barrel but instead engages a recess in the frame.
This ball retainer provides good durability when the revolver is cocked and ready to fire. This system recalls the original Triple Lock revolver, a gun known for its accuracy, but it is locked in three places.
The front of the trigger is very smooth and the corners are chamfered. This is actually a normal job. The square press trigger is very smooth and rolls 10 pounds and a few fractions.

After months of use, the single-step press weighs less than four pounds, perfect for most uses. The new walnut grip fits most hands better than the older Magna models.
A revolver is great for double-action shooting. It makes for a reliable rebounder on defense and outfield. A good choice of ammunition for long-term use is the SIG Sauer Elite .38 Special Training Load.
Using 125 grain FMJ cartridges, this load is very clean ammo. A powder burn is the burn as possible, leaving behind a small amount of powder ash.
FMJ bullets do not inject bullet shear into the bore. SIG Sauer also offers a 125-grain FMJ chambered in .357 Magnum. This allows for a higher financial burden in practice.

The 125-grain cartridge fires at the same point of impact as the 125-grain V-crown, a key advantage of the bullet.
I also extensively tested the new Model 19 with the Hornady XTP loading. Powerful, accurate and reliable, this is the premier choice for all Magnum applications.
I threw a hard chair and took advantage of every accuracy, shooting several groups of five at 25 yards.
Hornady offers the 125-grain XTP, the top of the range, as a common Magnum load. Hornady Critical Defense, below, is a purpose-built defensive load.

Before the copper veil hits the ground, it is always important to examine what you are working with. This is the complete list of specifications for the Model 19 Classic .357 Magnum presented by Smith & Wesson.
The Smith & Wesson Model 19 Classic is one of the newest introductions to their classic line of revolvers. In recent years, they have been bringing back some of their old models to please avid users. Smith & Wesson offers this statement about the newly introduced Model 19 Classic:
S&w Model 29 Classic Dx: It's All In The “dx”
The Smith & Wesson Classics series of revolvers are enhanced with modern internal components, but resemble the look and feel of classic models. The Model 19 Classic revolver features a beautiful walnut stock, 4.25-inch barrel, black adjustable rear sight, and a red dot sight. The revolver has a highly polished, blued finish and a traditional thumb grip for a classic look.
While shooting the Model 19 Classic at the range, I took a few different shots. For an old school revolver like this, I thought I'd throw in some good old ammo. So I pulled out some vintage Herter ammo that I was saving for this occasion. I used two different flavors of Herter's .357 Magnum 158 Grain FMJ and some .38 Custom Reloads to make my lighter for fun.
The .357 Magnum load tended to bark, but the bite was minimal; very little delay. The recoil resulting from this length of barrel and frame I would closely associate with a polymer frame 9mm. Your follow-up actions were faster in double or single action thanks to the low recoil and high muzzle velocity.
The .38 Special loads I handled were more comfortable and smoother to shoot, which is not surprising at all. This rifle would be a great way to teach someone to shoot a pistol. .38 medium caliber special ammo can give someone a better way to shoot a pistol while
