Tn Military Department - SMYRNA, Tenn. - Soldiers and Airmen with the Tennessee National Guard gathered at the Smyrna Volunteer Training Site on Dec. 13 to celebrate and honor the National Guard's 385th birthday as only the country music capital of the world can do.

"385 years ago today, the citizens of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banded together and raised America's first regiment for the common defense of the colony," said Tennessee Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jeff Holmes. "They were the first citizen-soldiers willing to sacrifice their lives at a moment's notice. "His legacy lives on today with men and women on the front lines, serving around the world and at home, protecting us from foreign threats, natural disasters and helping those in need."

During the ceremony, Marlowe played her new single, Giving You Up, a cover of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and previewed an unreleased song for Guardsman.
Holmes asked Marlow after Marlow's first set. Dakota Richardson with the 212th Engineer Company and Master Sgt. Anderson Young of the 164th Airlift Wing will join him in cutting the cake. It is customary for the oldest and youngest attendants to cut the cake with a ceremonial saber. Young, the senior guard in attendance represented the guard's past, while Richardson, the youngest guard in attendance, represented the guard's future.
"It was an honor to be a part of this event. I am proud to be a part of an organization with such a strong history of helping those in need," said Richardson.
For nearly two years, thousands of Soldiers and Airmen, including the Tennessee National Guard, have answered the call of nations and states. Parents have supported hurricane relief, civil unrest, floods, hurricanes, the COVID-19 pandemic and deployments around the world.

The Tennessee Army National Guard and the Tennessee Air National Guard form the National Guard in Tennessee. Other major components of the military department are the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Tennessee State Guard.
The Tennessee Army National Guard consists of the 230th Sustainment Brigade, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 194th Infantry Brigade, and 30th Soldier Command.

The Tennessee Air National Guard consists of the 118th Wing, 134th Air Refueling Wing, 164th Airlift Wing, and 119th Command and Control Squadron.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) provides statewide emergency management, coordinates federal assistance through FEMA, provides resources to state agencies, and supports local government emergency management agencies.
The Tennessee State Guard is a state defense force, a volunteer reserve force that can be activated in any part of the Tennessee National Guard on federal active duty.
The department has more than 550 state employees and more than 12,000 federal employees. The five Guard members have over 16,000 officers and enlisted personnel with a budget of $450 million+. The Adjutant General heads the department and is appointed by the Governor. In addition to the five commands, the War Records Office reports to the Adjutant General.
