It is among the 100 most contaminated US military bases with PFAS contamination, according to a list compiled by the Environmental Working Group. New Jersey is the only military installation to make the list.

PFAS, which stands for polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, is a family of thousands of different chemicals. Among the most common are perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Chemicals used in products ranging from cookware to firefighting foam have been linked to cancer and other health effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the list, PFOA and PFOS account for the majority of PFAS contamination in the Common Core, but perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS) and perfluorononic acid (PFNA) were also found.
PFAS levels of 264,000 parts per trillion were found in groundwater at the Common Base. The results of the water tests were first announced in 2017 by the Common Base.
The US Environmental Protection Agency's advisory limit for drinking water for PFOA and PFOS is 70 parts per trillion. New Jersey has a drinking water standard of 13 parts per trillion for PFNA and has proposed 14 parts per trillion for PFOA and 13 parts per trillion for PFOS.

The common base is far from the only site in New Jersey known to be contaminated with PFAS. Other military installations in the Garden State have high concentrations of PFAS contamination, such as the Naval Weapons Station. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, new sites of PFAS contamination are regularly discovered across the state.
West Deptford, which uses PFNA from the Solvay plant, has the highest level of PFNA pollution in the world. In September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded Rutgers $1 million to study PFAS exposure in Gloucester County.
In March, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ordered five chemical giants — Chemours, Dow DuPont, DuPont, Solvay and 3M — to remediate PFAS contamination in the Garden State. In May, the companies said they did not intend to pay the state for the cleanup.
That same month, DuPont, Chemours and 3M filed lawsuits over historic contamination at four New Jersey sites. This event is ongoing. In August, DuPont filed a federal lawsuit alleging the pollution was committed on behalf of the US government during several war efforts. The state later filed a motion to remand the case.

Then in May, the state sued or sued eight companies over PFAS contamination linked to a firefighting foam known as AFF. At the time, the DEP said the McGuire-Dick-Lakehurst joint in Burlington County was linked to high PFAS levels with foam; Naval Weapons Station in Monmouth County; the former Naval Air Warfare Center in Trenton; and the Federal Aviation Administration Technical Center in Atlantic County.
New Jersey has so far been among the most aggressive states in addressing PFAS, but efforts to address the problem at the federal level have slowed. In February, the EPA announced a national "action plan" to combat PFAS contamination, but stopped short of creating federal drinking water standards for the chemicals.
